Name: David Duhalde

Position: National Organizer

Chapter: Bowdoin College (2002-6)

Email: David@dsausa.org

I was first exposed to anti-capitalist/pro-labor activism through the experiences of my parents, both of whom were active in the labor movement and Chile Solidarity. I was primarily involved in anti-sweatshop work in high school, but I also helped organize city-wide demonstrations and delegations to rallies in Washington D.C. and I wrote articles for young people’s progressive magazines. In 2002, I help found a Young Democratic Socialists chapter at Bowdoin College in Maine. I was active both in YDS and the College Democrats, helping build bridges within the left in turning out the vote against Bush in 2004. The YDS chapter also led successful social justice campaigns, such as getting Bowdoin to go sweat-free in its Bookstore apparel. I often spent my summer vacations in the labor movement. I did the AFL-CIO’s “Union Summer” at 18, worked in the political department of UNITE (now UNITE-HERE), campaigned against Bush with SEIU and America Coming Together, and interned at Hong Kong-based China Labour Bulletin.

Maria DC.jpg

Name: Maria Svart

Position: Co-Chair

Chapter: New York City

Email: marisvart(at)gmail.com

My day job is union organizing, but I started out in a YDS chapter at the University of Chicago before getting involved in the CC as the Feminist Issues Coordinator, then Co-chair. At the UofC I studied the intersections of class, race, gender and sexuality throughout American history which explained a lot about my own life. I’m proud to be a socialist, I’m in it for the long haul, and I’m a true believer in Emma Goldman’s philosophy that “If I can’t dance, it’s not my revolution!”

A musician from an early age, he considers Victor Jara and Silvio Rodriguez his great influences and loves Inti-Illimani and Quilapayun.

maggie2.jpg

Name: Maggie Waithaka

Position: At-large

Chapter: UVA-Wise

Email: chiru85(at)msn.com

I’m 22 years old studying languages and foreign studies and I joined the YDS from the new chapter in the University of Virginia’s College at Wise. Being an immigrant from Kenya and having experienced both sides of the economic and social spectrums; living in the ‘first world’ and then the ‘third world’ as some may say, I have been searching for a way to reconcile or understand what belies the existence of major differences in the socioeconomic systems of our world today and what we can do to change them. YDS has been a great vehicle of understanding for me, and my aim is to continue spreading its message of democratic socialism as I learn more and more.
